When it comes to the rehabilitation of accidents and injuries most medical providers think within the convention of physical therapy and pharmacology. When injuries occur nerve fibers in the muscle tissue tear, strain, overstretch and literally shorten. This shortening of the tissue impairs normal movement . Scar tissue forms as a natural agent of healing. Often times the scar tissue can adhere to surrounding tissue and joints creating a memory of lost function as well as structural impairment. Cross fiber friction and myofascial release therapy, a form of deep tissue massage, reduces the scar tissue from forming as well as breaks it up when it does form. Nerve fibers in the bundles of muscle and other soft tissue such as ligaments, connective tissue, tendons and softer cartilage, can be damaged and impaired creating a muscle memory of dysfunction. Remedial massage therapy redirects the muscle memory by reconnecting the nerve -muscle connection. Heighten sensitivity and pain impairs mobility and natural healing and inflammation occurs. The function of inflammation is to “buffer” or protect the damaged area, but often times can delay in the healing. The most natural and effective support to healing is massage therapy, it is safe and has minimal to no negative side effects. Massage therapy works directly the site of the problems in a “hands on” approach. This approach makes common sense when you think about what is effected; the soft tissue. Change needs to come by working out the dysfunction. By working directly on the soft tissue you effect change. Thinking outside the conventions of the medical industry are alternative health care options. Repetitive motion can create dysfunction; i.e. pain, swelling, in the joints and surrounding tissues. Frequent stretches and changing posture can help reduce some of the symptoms, as can taking supplements for joints and ligament support. You have to increase on the body maintenance if you wish to preserve quality of life as we mature.

It has shown through the life time of an individual that odds are at some point in time all persons will experience some kind of low back pain/dysfunction. repetitive use,misuse;incorrect lifting,ergonomics and body posture, trauma, surgery, lifestyle choice; specifically atrophy in the abdominal and obesity can be all factors in creating low back dysfunction.

The pain started in my shoulder and is now spreading down my rib cage and to my chest. It does get better when I use heat patches but not for very long. I can feel a knot beside my shoulder blade.
What kind of treatment would be best? I would not want something too aggressive! – I have quit my job now, so hopefully I will get better soon! 🙂 – oh, but it means that I am a bit on a small budget! 😛
I am sorry to here about your troubles. First of all if your injury occurred on the job you should put in a work related claim. Even if you don’t work there any longer. If it happened at work it is a labor & industry matter. Get it documented as soon as possible. You can be eligible for therapy to get you better. It sounds like you have a muscle strain/sprain. Getting massage therapy care will help you pending no other issue are present to complicate things. Ice is always suggest for anything acute- that is to say for injuries that just happened. Try not to irritated it by lifting or doing any movements that irritate it. You can try laying on you side (hurt side up) with a pillow under your other side and bend to stretch open your side ribs and breathe deeply with the stretch. Andrew Wolfe,LMP
